I got two messages on VPL this morning: 1) A reply from Chutkat asking for examples of what type of realism we're looking for. 2) An initiating message from an artist that goes by Miranda. She gave me this example and this example of her previous avian-related bases. (*Edit: Links are now imgur links and should work for everyone.) So we need to find examples for Chutkat (which means we need to decide on our preferred realism style); I'll also be sending them the example of what we'll be buying as nature scenes from Light. I also need to know what you guys think of Miranda's art. c: EDIT: Here are some things I found on dA that might fit what we're looking for. What do you guys think? 1) A stylized realism, like on Felisfire? Not visibly scribbly or anything, but not uber realistic. I think #3 or 4 might work out okay, but the DA folk tend to either be not super good at art, or expensive professional artists. The links for Miranda's art don't work unless you log in to VPL.

Okay. Thanks for letting me know! I'll save and upload them and swap out the links. c:
The stuff from dA is just examples that we'd use for a style reference. We probably wouldn't directly commission anyone from dA at this point.

Someone named Yoddi posted this example on the VPL thread searching for base artists. They said their pricing is $10 per bird for detailed greyscale bases and 5$ each for alternate poses of the birds. Thoughts?

Oh my goodness you guys. This might be it... A person by the name of Tyme messaged me on VPL about possibly being our site artist. Here's the most relevant example they could find and here is their deviantArt account. What do you guys think? They said that while they do take commissions, they would be more interested in ongoing partnerships with us.

I vote stylized realism personally, but that's just me. c: Their art really is amazing.
Edit: I just saw the most recent post, that looks great!

UPDATE: Chutkat quoted a price of $250 for a full-body of Linnea. We won't be utilizing their services because that is too much for our budget.

Wow. Yeah, way too much. But Tyme looks like a great fit- going by their DA account, they'd be perfect for linearts as well as other art if needed.

Awesome guys!! I sent Tyme another message letting her know what we think. (I definitely agree with you guys and I like their art a lot too. I love their knowledge of wing structure.)
Now it's just waiting to hear back on if we can afford Tyme. ^_^; That and how they want any kind of partnership to work out.

Holy buckets! Last minute submission from another pet base artist. This person told me they'll do pet bases for us for $12 (which includes lineart and shading). I explored a little more of their website and I think it'd be worth it for the rest of you to do so as well. Tyme offered to do one bird as a trial run of sorts. That way Tyme can get a better idea of what to charge for each bird. If we like it, we can buy it. If we don't like it, then we don't have to buy it. It'd be a more recent example for them to use anyway. They charged Exhibited $30 per dino, to give us an idea of what it might cost us for a base. I asked Victoria (the person above) if they'd be okay if we commissioned one piece from them as well. This way the group of us can look at the two completed pieces and decide which style better suits our site. For this purpose I was thinking we could use the Roc, Pamola, or Orit. They're simpler birds with more basis on an earthly animal. I was leaning towards Orit because we know what changes we want the bird to have from the woodpecker and it's not so complex where I feel like we'd be taking advantage of Tyme (in case we don't go with them). What do you guys think?

Oh my. I love both Tyme and Victoria's work. c: *Pretends like she hasn't been oogling at Tyme's DA page for the last ten minutes* I think it's a good idea to trial run both of them by commissioning one bird - it might be interesting to see their different interpretations of each creature as well, with the VS project I feel like it isn't just about skill but also about how they go with / enhance the idea we initially had for each creature. I agree that it might be a good idea to go with the Orit, it seems to be the most fleshed out from what I'm seeing on the master list. It also looks like you have the clearest idea of the adaption from the real bird / Volary bird on that one.

I think that sounds like a great idea, getting one from both of them. I personally vote... Let's see... Probably Roc for the first bird.

I agree as well, and I like Victoria's style almost as much as Tyme's- I vote Orit, given that it's the one we have the clearest idea of and isn't super complicated.

Alright! Well that's 3 votes for Orit and 1 vote for Roc. I'll write up some stuff for the artists and send them both the description of the Orit and we'll go from there! c:
