I sent out the first official price quote inquiry! How exciting! (Okay, okay. It might not be exciting, but I think it is!) That said, please feel free to suggest artists that you know who can art in a realistic style. We need artists who can do landscapes, NPCs, and even the bird bases and markings/mutations. Please post your suggestions in reply to this post. ^_^ The artist I sent an inquiry to has a beautiful realistic style with nature landscapes. If we can afford this person and they are willing to do commissions for us, they could do the base images of the explore feature for us. That's specifically what I sent the inquiry about. c: And just so you know who this person is and so you can see their style for yourself (and give feedback on what you like or don't like about the artist's work), here is the link to their deviantArt account. And this is the piece that I used as a reference for their style when sending the inquiry. Remember that we won't be able to afford a lot of art at once (my monthly funds are very limited), but this is really important so we can start saving up for great art and be able to agree upon artists whose styles we like the best!

Oh my gosh, that's the kind of artist who makes me feel like I'm an insignificant bug laying on the ground in the middle of a street. xD (A little to descriptive? Maybe. But too bad. ) But yes, her art is gorgeous. I'm not too much of a fan of the characters (they're really well done, but perhaps not the more realistic type style that you might be looking for in Volary terms?), but the landscapes are beautiful. <3 They're really realistic and detailed. c: Unfortunately I don't know many artists myself, but I'll be on the lookout just in case. ^-^

Aww! Don't feel bad! Everyone's art is good in its own way. (But I get it. I used to feel dwarfed too (and sometimes still do) when I see artists that are that talented.) Yeah. The characters that LightConcorde draws aren't the style I'm hoping to find for us; I'm just in love with her landscapes. ^-^ I'm glad you agree though! I can't wait to hear back from her, but she lives in Poland and I'm pretty sure she's asleep right now. XD I don't know many either. I found this artist through Virtual Pet List, a site I frequent daily. I've been looking at as many artists as I can find there. XD I really appreciate that you'll be on the lookout though! You never know what you might find. ^_^

Wow! At the very least I hope she can do the scenery and backgrounds for the adventure/world map type art. I checked out some of her other works, and it looks like she can do semi-realistic stuff leaning more towards realistic pretty well. One artist I thought of when I saw this thread is actually from FF- Pairo could probably do some stuff, but he only does anthro and animals. I have no other contribution I can make towards this thread right now.

I've already recommended Pairo, though she's no longer active on FF anymore. I'm trying to get her to come on here, and she says she's really interested, but I don't know why she hasn't been on yet. Life ate her, I guess.

I'm looking forward to Pairo coming to the forum and joining us. c: Speaking of artists on VPL, there's also this person who I think might work for NPCs, items (the more realistic style), and possibly avian bases if they are so inclined. Here's their tumblr. On VPL they said they can do birds and that they can do realistic bases too, so I'm hoping it might work for us. We'll have to see. I haven't seen enough birds to know/feel comfortable either way.

I don't know about the feasibility of their prices, because they're rather expensive, but Chutkat and Pest both look like they'd be great options for site art. Especially Chutkat, because you could look into doing the 'hire for a month' and potentially get most of the items, the species art (because they will make the psds editable, which is one of the more important aspects) and markings and mutations. The first one you suggested has a style very good for making NPCs but it might not work for the avians because for them you'd want very clean lines and shading in more detail and sharpness than they had in the examples on their tumblr.

"I think the backgrounds themselves including such high amount of details would be worth around $30 each. The price of much simpler sceneries (deserts, arctic areas) would probably drop to $20 per piece. [. . .]
As for your other question - absolutely yes! c: They're my favorite [real-life] animals. Though lately I didn't really have much time/opportunity to draw any, I can assure I'm good at it. c:"
^ That's the response from LightConcorde. I'm so ecstatic over that! I can definitely afford $20-30 every so often, maybe multiple times a month depending on how things go that month. Also, they can do birds!!! They might be able to do the bases for us! I'm going to inquire more into that.
That means, though, that we need to decide how big of a canvas we want the birds to all be on. We have to allow not only for the birds themselves, but also room for backgrounds and accessory items.

Do you guys think a 600x550 or 600x600 canvas would be a good size for the avians? This would allow for the birds themselves to be 450px wide. Then they could either be 350px or 400px tall respectively. I'm thinking maybe 600x600 to allow room for the tails more. What do you guys think? This is a 600x550px canvas with a silhouette as a placeholder to give somewhat of an idea for where the avians would be taking up space. The 600x600 would allow for more space at both ends. Also, I heard back from Light already (LightConcorde) and she says she hasn't done pet bases before, but is willing to try one for $15. I think it might be worth it to try her out and see if her style with birds is something we like or not. What do you guys think?

I think 600x600 would the better choice simply because it's an even square and therefore easier to scale (most pet sites I know have accessories, etc drawn out twice the size or larger and then downsized for the final copy so fine details are easier to add and edit). Also, especially for the Phoenix and Orit, it would prevent the tail feathers from getting shortened or clipped to fit in the canvas.
$15 each is a fantastic price! Even if it's not the quality or style you want for the site, it could always be used elsewhere and it's not a huge risk financially.

What do you think of a 550x550 canvas? If we want to use 600x600, I think we'd need to move all the bird information (except for the name) underneath the avian image. Which can be done easily enough. I'm just wondering.

Holy freaking I don't even know. Look through the rest of that person's dA. When I said realistic, I never expected to find someone selling art that is that realistic. *-* What do you guys think? Should we inquire about NPC work? Which style do we like the best for VS? Also, do we want NPCs to be full-bodied or just waist-up kind of thing?- Mostly unimportant note: This is the person's art thread on Aywas.

550x550px would be better, then. It doesn't really matter all that much the exact size, because it can be scaled later if we try out one size and don't like it. For the NPCs... that person is amazing. No doubt about it. While full-body would be ideal, as always, price might be a limiting factor and waist-up tends to work just as well. If we're employing that person (which would be great, because come on) waist-up would probably be the best choice due to the price vs. importance of the NPC art being perfect.

True. We can commission the birds to be within one size, so there's enough room to expand the canvas if needed without it affecting the bases themselves.
If we're able to use this person, would we want the NPC style to be stylized realism or photo realism?
