Post here your suggestions of markings for use on all species of avian.

-Barred feathers (think Hawk's Wing with a harder gradient) -Ringed feather spots like a peacock's -Crest (covering chest feathers, longer head feathers) -Tips (covering tips of primaries tail feathers, beak and talons) -Edges (just little lines covering tips of wing feathers and tail feathers) -Bands (wide horizontal stripes on chest, belly, back) -Mist (full-body translucent cloudy marking with small opaque dots) -Stippled version of Undercast/Overcast

Now that we have an avian base artist, I think we should really start thinking up more markings (these ideas are great you guys!) and decide which ones we want the site to start out having.
Any ideas on how many markings to choose from there should be when the site opens? How many markings maximum should players be able to put on their avian? This number will increase as there are more markings added to the site. These are just our starting points.

Hmm. Just for keeping everything aesthetically pleasing, there should be limits, I'm just not sure how many. Perhaps different "regions" on the bird's body that can have markings? Like a rump, tail feathers, legs, etc. That would keep markings from crisscrossing and looking ridiculous overtop one another? That is, when you breed two avians, their markings could "split" or mix in different ways (breed A marking and B marking and you could get baby with either A or B marking, for example). Does that make sense at all? Or perhaps one "base" all-over marking in addition to the regional ones. But this is just me throwing ideas around! EDIT: Okay, here's a frankly ridiculous sketch of what I'm trying to explain with the regions and the layering and the breeding: www.dropbox.com/s/8f1lpy4mc5ybfk6/Screen%20Shot%202015-08-03%20at%208.18.06%20PM.png?dl=0

Wow, you guys are ROCKING the lists of markings XD I'm loving the other animal-based ones, there's so much to go off of. Do we collectively favor soft, more realistic markings, or a harsher cell-shaded style? I would assume the former option, it would be more to the style that's been discussed, but I just wanted to see what the thought was.

One more because I fell in love with Wyandotte chickens' feathers recently. I think fifteen or twenty markings might be a good start? Five small ones, five large nearly-full-body ones and five or ten medium-sized ones. And although for some of them the markings might be smaller and only on one part of the body, all that criss-crossing fun stuff is what makes designs beautiful and unique! Worst case, we end up with a bunch of hilariously ugly avians and only a few pretty ones. I think we're going with opacities for markings, although I might be wrong, so for every marking on both parents there'll be a chance of 100%, a chance of it not getting passed down and a chance of it being between 0 and 100 percent opacity. And if both parents have the marking the opacities are added together or something.

Sooshi is right, we're doing percentages. The crisscrossing idea is really, really good, but being able to use multiple markings in the same area leaves the door open to so many possibilities. It's really interesting what can be done with that. For example, this gryff was created using a black base, Face as the red marking, Panda and Piebald as the white markings, and then all the extra red and white is covered up with five black markings. I'd like to keep things like that open as an option to our players. As far as the percentages go, these are a few examples of the concept of how marking opacity will work: Parent A, Marking X @ 100% + Parent B, Marking X @ 100% = Offspring, Marking X @ 100%
Parent A, Marking Y @ 100% + Parent B, Marking Y @ 50% = Offspring, Marking Y @ 75-90% (just an example; the range isn't entirely figured out yet)
Parent A, Marking Z @ 100% + Parent B, No Marking Z = Offspring, Marking Z @ 35-65% (just an example like above)
All markings are passed down to offspring; markings can't be bred out.@ Rune: I think the more realistic in appearance we are with the markings the better. @ Sooshi: Wyandotte could be a very pretty marking! Even if we just did the wings that way it'd be cool. (I'm not opposed to full-body. I'm just not sure how practical it would be with the bases since it appears each individual feather has the markings on it.) 15-20 sounds like a good number to start with. How many markings should each custom avian be able to have then? 2-3? Maybe bump it up to 4 when the site exits testing and opens officially? (Gryffs, for example, has almost 60 markings and your customs can have up to 12 markings on them.)

Yeah, probably just the wings and a bit on the neck/back (or just the inner wings?) for Wyandotte because any more would be torture for our poor artist. Maybe start with 3 and when it opens officially have 4 markings maximum? Will there be a maximum on non-custom avians (for example, when they're born they automatically have the lowest-percentage markings cut out)? And if we do start with that many markings, could it be bumped up in the future to 5 or 6, or when a premium option comes out, would premium players get an extra marking slot?

Yeah, two to three markings per avian sounds good to start I think I understand the breeding bit now, I should have read that thread more completely ^_^'

Oh, I love your idea of an extra marking for premiums!

Alright. If it's okay with everyone I think 3 is a good spot to start for how many markings a custom avian can have. I do think we should bump it up to 4 once the site opens. I do not want a maximum for non-custom avians. People might want to keep those markings if they're doing breeding projects and are trying to insert new markings into the project or something. What are your thoughts on this everyone?Premium members getting an extra marking slot is definitely a possibility. Sooshi, you should post that here since it's your idea. c: The number of markings people will be able to put on custom avians will definitely increase over time. As we add more markings I think more slots should be added. This will keep variety going in designs.

No-maximum avians would be fantastic. I was thinking of breeding projects because that way 'custom' designed avians can still be made through breeding with lots of markings.

New marking idea thanks to image spam from a friend. xP Barnacle Geese!! I was thinking we could just do the black parts of the goose. So the non-black on the head wouldn't have any marking on it; it'd show whatever color(s) were there below the Barnacle Goose marking. The wings could be faded from black to transparent too. And then there's the tail and the legs. The beak could either be included or we could leave it out of the marking.
