I like the Great Horned and Eurasian Owls- their flatter heads and foreheads make them look fiercer and provide more space for a third eye in the centre (barn owls and others in that family tend to have a little ridge of feathers in the middle of their faces, whereas horned owls don't). Another suggestion is the Eastern Screech Owl, which has longer whiskers that curve more sharply and a slightly larger head compared to its body. Otherwise it's very similar to the Great Horned Owl.

That's a really good suggestion! I think, and this is a small detail, that I like the Great Horned Owl better than the Eastern Screech Owl because the Great Horned Owl has flatter feathers on the face and the more prominent white line above the eyes. I think that'd make it easier to add a third eye and make it seem more as if it belonged on the owl. If we look at the whole body of the Great Horned Owl, I like its feet a lot. I like the general body shape really. But one thing we could do, and you guys need to tell me what you think about this, is give the Great Howned Owl a more visible neck. So it'd be kind of like the Eurasian Eagle Owl in profile, but with the same general shape of a Great Horned Owl.

I agree, although the white line wouldn't be in the species art unless it was a highlight of some sort. Something in between the profile of the Eurasian Eagle and the Great Horned would work, but it depends on the pose of the bird- flying, a neck as long as the Eurasian Eagle Owl's would look fine, but in a sitting position it doesn't look altogether natural, as birds tend to tuck their heads in close when they're resting.

I was thinking the birds should all be flying. I honestly hadn't even considered them in a resting pose. XD

On the subject of the Diniao, I sort of fell in love with the Tasmanian Masked Owl. xD It's so pretty. <3 However, I do agree that it'd be easier to add a third eye to the Great Horned Owl, it's like it has a space there already for it haha. Personally I really support the idea of having the Eurasian Eagle Owl's profile however, having a neck would add some extra distinction I think. It would be cool to keep the Great Horned Owl's head though, and maybe accentuate it's horns. I think they're really cool. Maybe even make them into actual horns? Perhaps some bones could jut from the skull and create something similar to bull horns ( link). Perhaps facing in the opposite direction though. It'd create a more scary type of bird, but with the third eye I think it was already heading in that direction anyhow. 'Diniao' sort of sounds evil anyway. As for other types of birds, I'd really like to see something like a Kingfisher ( link). They'd have a fish diet. I'm not sure where on the rarity scale they'd be though. For modifications, I think it'd be interesting if we tried to sort of extend it's body a little bit to make it longer. Otherwise we could go in the opposite direction and round it's belly more to make it more like a Gronckle from How to Train Your Dragon ( link). A huge body but with tiny little wings. I don't know. ALSO. A SECRETARY BIRD ( link). WE NEED ONE. LOOK AT THESE FEATHERS ( link). /shot And yes, they do fly ( link). Maybe name it Retaby? Aprelt? Fleot? Brizin? I think I like Retaby, but I'm horrible at coming up with names. Their eggs look like this, if you decide you like the idea I'd imagine that the egg would stay roughly the same. I'll perhaps try to think of more possible bird species later~

Yeah, I definitely want to keep the head of the Great Horned Owl.
We have to be careful not to push any bird too far in terms of good vs bad type thing. I'd hate for people to not like a species because it looks too evil, you know? I think we can definitely add a horns mutation to the mutation idea list though. That way people could add their own horns to the birds and make them look "evil" on their own. c:
I think a Kingfisher-type bird could be really cool. c: I'm a little wary of the secretary bird's head feathers simply because there's likely going to be a mutation for stuff like that, but I like the overall shape of the bird. ^_^
Do you have any ideas on how we can build the species we already have? We need to figure those out so we can get art of them.
The site won't open with more than 5 species because 1) it's already going to be pricey with the bases and the markings and mutations for each bird, and 2) we have to leave room for introducing new species later on, right? ;D I like the ideas you came up with though. I really do.

That is true. I didn't mean so much 'evil' as I did more 'intimidating', but I see your point. Haha, alright. I'll go poke around more at the bird masterlist and see what I can do~ I'm also thinking of hitting the NPC threads a bit as well.

We also need a hummingbird. I saw one today and immediately thought of Volary Sky.

Guys guys guys! LOOK AT THIS BIRD! Here's more pictures: link, link, link, and link. It's a quetzal. Wouldn't this be awesome inspiration for the Phoenix?? Obviously we would make it more like a bird of prey, but it could still maintain a sense of elegance in the base design. I love the head too. We can pick and choose which parts of the bird we want to keep, what we want to change, anything new we want to add... anything. But I think it's a good starting point. Especially the wings and the tail. That TAIL! What do you guys think? (Seriously, bring me back down to Earth. XD) Edit: There's this bird too that I love the head and overall shape of. What do you think of this?

I love the Quetzal! The other bird I'm kind of iffy about, (though I love it's head) but I do love the quetzal.

What if we kept the body of the Quetzal, but stuck the head of the Turaco on it?

The quetzal looks amazing as a base for the phoenix! The head I'm a tiny bit iffy on, just because of the way the feathers are going around the beak, but the Turaco's head with its body would be perfect. Maybe to make it a bit more fierce/predatory, we could have the head feathers angled back a tiny bit (the current 90° positioning doean't look too aerodynamic)and a bigger beak?
